Presenting BATS 101st production.
An Evening with Gary Lineker
Written by Chris England, the play focuses on one match in particular – the semi-final between England and Germany and the group who have assembled in the hotel room to watch it. As the drama develops on the pitch, more develops off the pitch as the various couples slowly reveal the truth about their relationships all the way through to the penalty shoot out.
Cast members were: –
MONICA: Wendy Ann Thomas
BIRGITTA: Sam Fox
IAN: Steve Nelson
DAN: Roger Bell
BILL: Ian Evans
This play was a brilliant comedy about relationships, betrayal, blackmail and an infamous penalty shoot out. Photographs of the dress rehearsal are below….
Shows were on the 20th, 21st, 26th, 27th & 28th March 2015 at St. Teilo’s Church Hall, Bishopston.
‘We really enjoyed our Evening With Gary Lineker by the way. It was very good indeed. So much dialogue – it must have been a nightmare for the cast to learn and they were all very good. Very natural. I don’t know how they do it. Many congratulations to all concerned’
“Tapas idea great, creative with a good atmosphere in the hall”
“Great play. Well done!”

The story: it’s July 4th 1990, and England are playing Germany in the World Cup Semi Final. Monica is a desperate woman vying for her husband Bill’s affection and attention, and in an attempt to rekindle their marriage, they go to Majorca on holiday. There’s just one problem though- Bill is OBSESSED with football. Monica fantasizes about a romance with Gary Lineker, the “Queen Mother of Football”, and has also been sneaking off with Bill’s travel writer friend Dan Hudson, who unexpectedly arrives at their hotel to watch the match!!! And then we have Bill’s colleague Ian, inappropriately football hating, hopelessly chasing the lovely Birgitta, his German travel rep friend…
The reality: It’s Monday night, it’s cold, it’s dark, but hey we have a play to put on “An Evening With Gary Lineker”. Three rehearsals in our latest and 101st production is shaping up rather nicely with the set already emerging from the stage, lighting and effects well in hand and our actors beginning to feel their way around the script, so much so one or two (no names) are already going off book! With just five acting parts this is a challenging play for our actors in terms of the number of lines they must learn and the amount of time they spend on stage but they are clearly up for it and are making my first play as Director quite a joy to be part of. But this is more than just a play about football, it is about appreciating what you have and letting go of what you don’t. So you won’t need to be the world’s biggest football fan, or even like football at all, to enjoy this award winning comedy! But do expect a play of two halves, a few fouls, some good passes, extra time and penalties and overall an impressive acting formation from just five of BATS’ finest.
